Carl Weber, 26, was an ordinary college dropout and part-time grocery store stock clerk in small town America until he made a name for himself as a completely different kind of person:   a vampire.   Carl's bizarre claim was accompanied by an equally bizarre lawsuit:   Carl claimed that he should be allowed to work at night, despite the fact that his small town employer was only open during the day.

Cassie Barnes, 23, works in the local thrift store, and is an amateur poet.   She is an outsider in Greenville's social world; her only close friends are Carl and Toby.    Cassie has been Carl's most vocal supporter, but has also never hesitated to voice her doubts about his vampirism.

Greenville California (population 2500) is a quiet community swept neatly into a corner of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.   Carl's claims, and the subsequent lawsuit that followed, made this town famous for a few days in early December 2005.

What would you do if your best friend told you he was a vampire?

It's a hard question to answer (especially because it's so hard to take seriously), yet that was the very question that Toby Sheldon and Cassie Barnes had to answer when their friend Carl "came out" to them.    This is the story of two friends struggling to defend their friend's unusual claims, even as his delusions begin to tear them apart.

Carl Weber is a vampire...

Or, so everyone who knows him agrees.   Maybe he is, and maybe he isn't, but one thing is for certain - it takes a certain kind of person to do the things that Carl Weber did.
